Unscented soap may not be the sexiest shower product, but it certainly deserves the spotlight, especially for those with sensitive skin. These solid body washes have no fragrance on their ingredient list, following a minimalist approach to skin care. Excluding fragrance and including soothing actives and gentle cleansing agents, these soap bars are a practical shower product that not only is ideal for everyday use, but also compact and convenient to take with you to the gym or on your next vacation. If you're not sure if unscented soaps are your thing, follow us and learn all you need to know about them. We have a few answers for you, but that's not all; we'll also let you know about our favorite formulas.

Are you supposed to use an unscented soap?

If all you love in soaps is how good they smell, the concept of unscented soaps may be strange at first. But soap bars bring much more than a pleasant fragrance to your showers. They're a practical way of granting a thorough cleanse, packing cleansing agents in the most compact way there is. If your skin doesn't give you reasons to be careful with the body wash you choose, you can go with fragranced and fragrance-free body soaps according to your preferences. But if you struggle with skin sensitivity or skin pathologies, choosing an unscented soap may be crucial to your skin health.

Is unscented soap better for the skin?

As we've seen above, if you struggle with skin sensitivity, that may be exactly what you need. And why is that? In short, by using an unscented soap, you're preventing your skin from getting in contact with an agent that is often irritating for sensitive skin: fragrance. It's not that the soap itself is healing or that its main purpose is to deliver actives that actively soothe the skin. They may as well have caring ingredients, but the main purpose is to wash without irritating the skin along the way!

Do unscented soaps get rid of smells?

They sure do! The unscented soaps contain cleansing agents like the fragranced versions. When it comes to cleansing power, they should meet the same standards. And it's easy to understand why. It's not the fragrance in body soaps that gets rid of body odors. So their absence has absolutely no impact on that matter.

How to properly wash with a bar soap?

It is intuitive to use, but a good how-to can always come in handy. You have a few different options: you can foam it up in your palm and then massage the skin of your body, or you can apply the soap bar directly on your skin to distribute the product before massaging. Alternatively, you can apply it onto a washcloth or loofah and massage these bath accessories on your skin for a proper cleanse. Keep in mind that using your hands may be the gentler way, as bath accessories will always create small friction that may be critical for those with sensitive skin.
