The Best Scar Prevention Creams

Scar prevention creams can help you manage the wounds after getting your skin torn. Whether it’s from surgery or an accident, it’s always important to keep the wound clean and moisturized. Even though scars can come from several situations, the best scar creams are usually the same in every situation. This is due to the fact that the healing process is similar in each situation. In short, it has three phases and lasts up to one year. Given that, scar management creams should be used from the moment the wound closes, and stitches are removed up until one year after getting that wound.

The repair process can lead to a few discomfort symptoms, such as redness, itching, pulling sensation, and pain. Making sure that the skin has the best environment to heal not only helps to prevent extremely visible scars but also to prevent hypertrophic and keloid scarring. Given that people of African and Asian origin have more tendency to develop those, they should be extremely careful. After getting keloid scars, they can only be managed by a doctor, so avoiding them is the best course of action.

Step 1: Keep the scar clean

Keeping the wound clean is mandatory to prevent infection. However, not all cleansing creams are the same. Ideally, use gentle cleansers with repairing ingredients. These are ideal because you want to keep the skin clean but not squeaky clean. Our favorites are the ones from repairing and nourishing ranges, especially from pharmacy brands:

Step 2: The best scar prevention creams that form a silicone layer

Several studies have proven that silicone is the best way to keep the skin properly healing. All in all, scar prevention is all about making sure that the skin has the best conditions to heal. This means a microorganism-free environment, with soothing and repairing ingredients, and the right level of water. Ideally, use these silicone products for about three months after the wound closes. Additionally, we’ve also added one product that, even though it doesn’t contain silicones, it’s great for scars. However, it does contain growth factors, which help to heal the skin.

Step 3: Keep that skin hydrated

In case you’re not able to pay for the silicone creams, some research indicates that using a repairing cream (the famous “cica” creams with Centella asiatica) can have great outcomes also. We advocate using the silicone creams for three months and then following up with these cica creams for 9 months after that. However, as we’ve said, research shows that you can use just these from day 1 if you prefer.

There are different textures, so we advise you to search for the one that suits you best. Lighter textures will work better on the face, especially if you have oily skin. Balmy ones will be great for the body or extremely dry skin types.

Step 4: Slather on a lot of sunscreen

After scar prevention creams, these are the most important thing you should take into consideration. Scars tend to easily get pigmentation, so you can end up with a very noticeable scar because of that. Thus, using a great sunscreen with high UVB/UVA protection is key.
