Antiperspirants vs Deodorants: What’s the difference?
We often use the word “deodorant” to refer to all sorts of anti-sweat solutions; if it goes under our arms, we call it “deodorant.” However, that is not quite precise enough.
Strictly speaking, a deodorant keeps you fresh by neutralizing body odor–but it doesn’t actually reduce the amount of sweat on your skin. If you want to control sweat, you need an antiperspirant.
Antiperspirants usually contain aluminum, which blocks the sweat ducts in order to reduce the amount of sweat that reaches the surface of the skin. Antiperspirants are also deodorants, in the sense that they also neutralize body odor, but their main function is to keep sweat in check and help you avoid underarm wetness.
If you have some concerns regarding the use of aluminum in your skincare and beauty products, you’re not alone–but we hope you’ll find some comfort in recent scientific data! In 2020, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, which provides the European Commission with scientific advice on the safety non-food items, presented its final opinion on the safety of aluminum in personal care products. According to the SCCS, the use of aluminum compounds in skincare and beauty products, including antiperspirants, is safe under specific concentrations (6.25% in non-spray formulations, 10.60% in spray formulations). This final opinion takes into account the latest scientific data, and as scientifically-minded Europeans ourselves, we feel rather comfortable with it here at Care to Beauty.
Now that you understand the key difference between antiperspirants and deodorants, you’re ready to choose your anti-sweat solution. If you’d like to reduce sweat, explore our selection of antiperspirants; if you’re looking for an underarm solution that doesn’t contain aluminum but will help you minimize body odor, look for deodorants instead.
For intense or “excessive” sweating
Intense sweating on the underarm area is one of the most common complaints we receive from our customers. Fortunately, we have plenty of antiperspirant solutions that will reduce sweating, minimize body odor, and keep your underarm area feeling both fresh and dry throughout the day.
If regular antiperspirants aren’t enough to keep sweat at bay, then you can opt for an intensive treatment. Pharmacy brands like Ducray and Vichy offer specialized treatment products that, over a few days, will help you reduce sweating.
The best antiperspirants for the hands & feet
Intense sweating on the hands and feet is another common complaint. If you’d like to get rid of the feeling of clammy hands and feet, then these products will help.
Sesderma Dryses Antiperspirant Solution is our ultimate best seller in this category, since it can be applied to hands, feet, and body parts aplenty. If you’d like to tackle sweat all over, this versatile product is a great choice.
Alcohol is a relatively common ingredient in deodorants and antiperspirants, but some people would rather do without it. If you’ve been looking for an effective perspirant that doesn’t contain any alcohol, then these products will work well for you. There are many, many more options, but these are the ones our customers love the best.
(Protip: most Vichy antiperspirants are alcohol-free!)
To avoid stains and white marks
Welcome to the “anti-white mark” category! If you usually wear white or black clothes, you are probably sick and tired of your deodorants or antiperspirants leaving yellow and white marks on the underarms of your clothes. We have selected the best no-stain antiperspirants below, so you can say goodbye to unsightly marks for good.
Our best deodorant for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin tends to overreact to deodorants; it’s not uncommon for people to find angry red rashes on their underarms as a result of wearing a specific product! For this reason, we thought we’d look to our customers for this one and let them pick out the best deodorant for sensitive skin.
We arrived at La Roche-Posay 24h Deodorant Stick, an alcohol-free and aluminum-free stick deodorant that not only controls the amount of sweat, but also neutralizes body odor and offers soothing properties. If it sounds perfect, it might just be!
If you’re not too excited by stick deodorants, we have some more options. All of these deodorants are alcohol-free and aluminum-free, and they all hail from pharmacy brands that, throughout the years, have proven themselves in the care of sensitive skin.
With essential oils
And now for something completely different, these deodorants use essential oils to provide long-lasting protection against body odor. The all-natural Weleda Citrus Deodorant 24h features zesty notes of lemon and Litsea cubeba, which offer a pleasant fragrance that will please your body as well as your mind. In turn, the Caudalie Vinofresh Natural Stick Deodorant provides invigorating protection with organic eucalyptus essential oil. Finally, the luxe Clarins Eau Dynamisante Deodorant provides a revitalizing feeling with a spa-fresh fragrance derived from essential oils.
Our best vegan deodorants
If you’re trying to go vegan in your skincare and beauty routines, you may find it hard to spot the right deodorant for you. These recommendations are all aluminum-free and certified vegan. The Dr. Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant and the Weleda Citrus 24h Roll-On Deodorant both harness the antimicrobial properties of witch hazel to keep your underarms fresh. On the other hand, the Mádara Herbal Deodorant Roll-On uses potassium alum, a natural crystal mineral with astringent, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties.
The best smelling deodorants & antiperspirants
Deodorants and antiperspirants may be seen as boring and utilitarian, but they don’t have to be. If you’re the kind of person who starts layering fragranced products from the moment they leave the shower, then there’s no reason for you to miss out on some of the best smelling deodorants on the market. These are some of our favorites!
